Statement, 11 Years Anniversary of MAP Radio

Statement in four languages  for MAP Radio 11 Years Anniversary

Migrant Workers should be entitled to Access Information in their own Language -

Allow MAP Radio to broadcast again!

MAP Foundation, a migrant rights organization based in Chiang Mai with an office in Mae Sot, Tak Province, was established in 1996 and registered in 2002 under the Thai name มูลนิธิเพื่อสุขภาพและการเรียนรู้ของแรงงานกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ or “Foundation for the Health and Knowledge of Ethnic Migrant Labour.” MAP’s mission is to empower the migrant community from Burma to receive their full rights under Thai law.

Ensuring that migrant workers are able to access information about their rights has been one of MAP’s main goals. As part of our strategy, MAP has had a community radio station which broadcasts in the Shan language in Chiang Mai for eleven years now, which we are celebrating tonight. Currently though, MAP Radio, 99 FM MHz, along with most other community radio stations in Thailand, has been closed by the military government since last year even though we do not engage in politics. This has been a blow to migrant workers who rely on our radio broadcasts for updated information on policies as well as information on daily living. Through the radio, this information reaches hard-to-reach migrants working as domestic workers, construction and other jobs, and empowers them to protect their rights and improve their well-being.

MAP Radio has completed all the steps to re-register with the Thai government and is awaiting final permission to continue broadcasting. With our 11th Anniversary of the radio station, we wanted to take the opportunity to draw public attention to our situation and call on the Thai government to allow MAP Radio to broadcast again immediately.
